There are many careers that can make a man either in Sciences, Social Sciences or Art. In Art, one can choose law, international relation, English, literature, dramatic art and so on. In Social Sciences, one can become an accountant, an economist, a psychologist and so on while in Science, the area which I belong to, one can become an engineer, a pharmacist, a quantity surveyor, an architect, a nurse, a medical doctor and the likes.
I had the opportunity to visit the hospital one day and I saw the way the doctors were battling to rescue the life of a pregnant woman whose life was almost getting out of her. I was touched and then I developed an interest and chose to study Medicine and Surgery which eventually will make me to be a doctor, a career that saves humanity from untimely death.
This drive made me to inquire more about the profession from the school counsellor when I got back to school the following day and the developed interest started growing.
I like the career for the following reasons:
Firstly, the career saves life. Many people are dying due to ignorance, carelessness, nonchalant attitude and so on. Death can be averted through diagnosis, treatment and counselling from the doctors.
Secondly, the dressing of the doctors makes them smart and different from other health workers.
Thirdly, people accord the doctors an uncommon prestige. In every hospital, patients always patiently wait to see the doctor .
Furthermore, medical doctor as a profession is lucrative. Doctors are well paid in terms of salary and allowances both here in Nigeria and in advanced countries.
In addition, the career can be established. A doctor may decide to establish his own hospital instead of joining the unending queue of applicants.
Lastly, the career has a wide range of specializations. There are many areas of specializations in the profession such as: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, Neurology, and so on.
The efforts I am putting to become a doctor is to improve myself in English Language, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry as five required O’ level subject needed at credit level, writing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and getting admitted into the University for the six years course.
In the next ten years, I can see myself as a medical doctor willing to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
In the nearest future, I wish to have a private hospital that will be taking care of the less privileged especially pregnant women. So help me God. Adeyemi Benclinton.
